| The super-bright, 4.3-inch (diagonal) touchscreen display gives is anti-glare for ease of viewing during the day and automatically changes its color profile for easy viewing at night or in dim light. It offers 2d or 3D perspective views. The widescreen format gives you 70% more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Also, the device itself is larger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push. | |
Wider screen lets you see more of what's around. Compare these actual size views of a 3-inch (diagonal) screen![]() | and a 4.3-inch diagonal widescreen![]() |
This lets you enter several spots into the device (day care - supermarket-cleaners - office - day care, for example) and it will plot the fastest route. And once you've found the best router, the "Route Planning" feature lets you save up to 10 different routes, Garmin touts the feature for providing, "the most efficient route for errands, deliveries and sales calls." The feature also makes this an instant essential accessory for anyone who shops garage sales (you know what we're talking about).
A trip log provides an electronic bread crumb trail of up to 10,000 points, so you can see where you've been on the map.
Garmin's "Where Am I?" feature is a useful safety feature on all nüvis, but voice recognition makes it even better.
On any nüvi (including this one), you can just tap "Where Am I?" to find the closest hospitals, police stations, fuel stations, nearest address and intersection. Also see your exact latitude and longitude coordinates. With the 800s, all you have to do is say "Where am I?" to get the info.
Like the nüvi 700s, the 800s will also remember where you parked. It automatically marks your position when you remove it from the windshield mount, so you can navigate with nüvi on foot and find your way back to your vehicle. Perfect for unfamiliar spots and crowded lots such as amusement parks, stadiums and malls.

![]() 2008-12-29 Consumer GPS still a flawed industry GPS units have gotten alot cheaper since they first came on the market, and the units have improved dramatically. Unfortunately, no unit is perfect and you still have to be prepared for errors and problems. The 850 is dark gray/black unit that looks sleek and attractive. It feels sturdy and I like the look and feel of it. The touchscreen is clear and legible and work wells. Garmin has the reputation of having some of the best routing algorithims, the best features, the best maps and the most expensive units. Other brands are catching up though and I'm not sure some of the more expensive Garmin units prices are justified. The main selling point of this unit is its speech recognition, so that you can verbally enter your address or place name. I have to say, it works pretty well, as long as it is quiet. As long as people are not talking and the radio is off, it can usually understand what you are saying, though sometimes it takes a few tries with certain names. If it all goes smoothly it is slightly faster then tapping it in. It is a nice feature to have but I'm not sure it worth the extra money at this point. The 760 which lacks this feature is otherwise almost identical to this unit and is half as much. I've downloaded pictures and music to my 850, and that is a nice feature. Its fun to be able to pull up pictures or music for the road. However the Garmin's built in speakers, while acceptable for its direction giving, is awful for playing music. The music volume is low and washed out. They really need to invest in better speakers. The 850 is the way to go if don't care about the 880's MSN direct or other features you have to pay for. I personally don't think these features work well or are worth the money. Even with their premium price the 800 series don't come with carrying cases, wall chargers and other goodies, that often cheaper units come with. Further, bigger screen units with more 3D mapping capabilities have begun to the the market. The biggest problem I've had and the reason why this unit is not getting five stars, is sometimes it simply doesn't work properly. I've read that this is a problem in all or most gps devices, but since this is my first unit, I can't say for sure. I've had it for six months and the unit has inexplicably crashed once on me, where I head to turn it off and turn it back on. The real problems though are that sometimes (1) it cannot find your address, (2) it does not route you to the right address and (3) gives you improper directions, ie- tells you to turn the wrong way, etc, and (4) it routes you along an inconvenient and out of the way path. I have experienced all of these problems, and while they are not all the time they happen often enough. All that said I overall like my unit and it is the best speech recognition unit on currently on the market. |
![]() 2008-12-28 PERFECT! Loved this product! I bought it as a christmas gift for my fiance who originally wanted a Garmen 750... and in searching the internet I found an updated version from that! The voice recognition is great! And it comes with preloaded maps! He LOVES it! |
![]() 2008-12-26 Awesome Product This unit is an awesome product. Just received it as a Christmas Gift from my lovely wife. The ease of its use is a major plus. The only thing I would add would be bluetooth. |
![]() 2008-12-25 Great product! This GPS works just as described. No problems whatsoever. Fast, accurate, and easy to operate. My one criticism is that Garmin should include a carrying case with this higher end model. |
![]() 2008-12-17 GPS Product was fully functional but was not sealed in the original packaging though the item was advertised as new. Still a good buy and delivered in a timely manner. |
