Nikon 18-55 VR
Overall this is a nice lens. The only problem I've noticed is that it has a hard time with auto focus when used over water. An example would be an island in a lake. I have to compose with the island at the very bottom of the frame for the autofocus to stop cycling.

Great zoom for the price!
No complaints on this one! Sharp photos, good contrast, VR visually better than without, nice range for a mid to wide zoom! I would keep it if I weren't upgrading to a full frame body, D700. Even on full frame, the qualities above are the same, but you get a vignette when not cropping. Although, I like to use the vignette as a creative tool!

When you need something lightweight and small
This is the lightest and smallest lens I own and it serves a very specific purpose. It stays on my backup DSLR, a Nikon D40x, which I keep in my car and take with me on hiking trips when weight is an issue or when I don't want to risk damaging my D90.

I recently took this lens out on the streets of Boston at night to take several shots without a flash and no tripod. The lens functioned rather well and the VR was just about perfect. I definitely recommend the VR over the non-VR version of this lens. The little extra cost is worth it. I've been amazed at how often I don't need a tripod with all my VR lenses.

My only complaint is the zoom range - would have liked something a little bit stronger. However, maybe that would have just made it bigger and more cumbersome. For my uses, this lens has worked just fine. I don't recommend it as a primary lens for anyone, but if you need something for situations such as mine then it's a good solid choice.

I purchased this for my mom and she has been thoroughly pleased with this lens.

Great for the price; more durable than you might expect
As the kit lens for my D60, it's nice to have VR. This lens takes acceptably sharp images, and is lightweight. It also survived a pretty nasty fall.

Overall, for the money, it's hard to find a better lens.

Nikon Cameras History

Nikon Corporation is one of the major companies of the Mitsubishi Group, a multinational corporation headquartered in Tokyo, Japan and specializing in optics and imaging.

Nippon Kogaku K.K., or Japanese Optical Society (afterwards became known as Nikon Corporation) was formed at July 25, 1917 as a result of merging of three firms: Tokyo Keiki Seisaku-sho's optical division, Iwaki Glass Seisaku-sho и Fujii Lens Seizo-sho. The new company was aimed at manufacturing high-quality optics for Imperial Japanese Navy. And up to 1945 it actually was their main goal that determined the company’s philosophy and traditions. The first president of Nippon Kogaku was Yoshihira Wada.

Apart from military equipment the company produced microscopes, telescopes and other measuring instruments for industry and science. From 1932 they started serial production of Nikkor lenses for photo cameras. It’s an interesting fact that all Canon cameras, launched between 1937 and 1947 were equipped with lenses produced by Nikon!

After the WW II Nippon Kogaku K.K. manufactured its own camera –a rangefinder Nikon 1 – and stopped manufacturing lenses for Canon. The new camera appeared already Nikon-branded.
