C. Crane FM Reflect Antenna Price: $24.95
Availability: Usually ships in 1-2 business days |
Product Description Whether you listen to a portable radio or a top-of-the-line stereo receiver, the quality of sound coming from an FM station is dependent upon the station's signal strength in your area. Adding an FM antenna can help greatly, so be sure to select the best FM antenna for your needs. The FM Reflect Antenna will work with any portable or stereo receiver. This antenna incorporates a new dipole design for maximum gain across the entire FM broadcast band. Up to 213 percent more powerful than a standard dipole antenna, it covers the entire FM band with an almost flat response, where standard dipoles start to fall off near the end of the band. Many FM stations now broadcast their signal with circular polarization. The FM Reflect Antenna is the only FM antenna that can be adjusted to take advantage of this. It is not affected as much by surrounding objects and people as other FM antennas are.

| Best, affordable indoor-FM antenna |

Customers Reviews 2009-01-08 FM Reflect Larger and longer than I expected, but it works well. I can now receive stations that I could not before. | 2008-12-30 Results may vary . . . but this antenna does work So many people left either great or horrible reviews about this product, that I had to weigh in with the real story.
Based on the reviews on Amazon, I bought antenna with skepticism. Worst case scenario, I would return it. I live in Orange County, California, which is about 25 miles away from all the major broadcasters in Los Angeles. There is a lot of opportunity for interference between here and LA. I tried the fancy power antennas, and they pulled in far fewer stations than the simple, $1.99 dipole antenna from the local electronics shop. Don't waste your money on the powered antennas--you'll only frustrate yourself.
I tried several thin, copper dipole antennas, and they all seemed to work pretty well. I had to try several because the cat kept chewing through them no matter how well I hid them.
The C. Craine FM Reflect dipole antenna does pull in more HD stations than the cheaper dipole antennas. Trying different placement options, I found that I could pull in almost all of the HD stations available in the area. I was not able to pull my favorite station, KCRW, in as HD--but this is not a failure of the C. Craine antenna--the station's HD broadcast just isn't strong enough to reach my radio.
This antenna has two distinct advantages over other dipole antenna: (1) with careful placement, it does pull in HD stations that other antennas do not; (2) it's thick, durable construction is impervious to cats.
The $30 price tag is a bit steep for a dipole antenna, but all things considered, it's still cheaper than paying the vet bill because the cat swallowed copper wire.
As long as you understand that this antenna does not work miracles, you won't be disappointed with the C. Craine FM Reflect. | 2008-12-26 Acceptable Improvemant After the purchase of my Sony HD radio to my disappointment I couldn't receive any HD stations. Upon further investigation I found that there were only a few stations in my listening area and without a good external antenna I would never hear them.
After all I read I found the Crane antenna to be very popular for it's price range after receiving it I followed others suggestions as to bending and forming and moving it in any and all directions. I now receive the HD stations in my area and one HD3 station. However there is one slight drawback you have to adjust for each group or areas of stations to listen as with any directional antenna.
Overall I am very pleased and I will say the quality is excellent. In order to make it a little more inconspicuous maybe they could offer it in black also?
| 2008-12-23 Outperforms a Terk FM-50 IMHO I had a Terk FM-50 which worked for a while unamplified. Replaced it with this and used the same RG59 12' cable to connect it to my home theater receiver. It was an improvement when I connected the FM Reflect to it, but then the signal got worse again. So I replaced the original RG59 with 12' of quad shielded RG6 and now Public Radio comes in crystal clear. The biggest benefit is that besides the improved analog reception this antenna will work with HD radio.
The quality of RG6 cable you use, if any, is vital. Also, though it isn't in the instructions that come with the antenna you can use any "screw-on to push-on F connector" to connect to the unthreaded coax connector on the back of your receiver. | 2008-10-14 Antenna This antenna removed all the static and channel fade that was present with one of the flat antennas. Simply placing the antenna like a "T" was enough to greatly improve the reception. Connecting was simply a matter of screwing in into the receiver. | |

Photographer Interview: C.K.
1. Who are you? Please give a brief background information
Born and raised in Austria, I studied physics in Vienna and got my Ph.D. in
the US from MIT at Boston, Massachusetts. I worked as a research scientist
for a couple of years at the University of California, San Diego. Now I am managing three telecommunication companies in Austria, Hungary, and Croatia. I
am married and have two fabulous kids, who make for countless photo
opportunities.
2. How long have you been doing photography?
The photography virus really infected me only 2-3 years ago when I bought a
consumer digicam. Luckily (in hindsight), this camera got stolen and I was
ready to invest into something a bit more serious.
3. How did you start doing photography? What got you interested in it?
I am interested in botany and started taking close-ups of all types of medicinal
plants that grow in my area. Soon afterwards my attention shifted to my
kids who continue to provide ample photo opportunities. Take all those things together and you have as good an idea as I myself have of why I started doing photography.
4. Do you earn living from photography or you do photography as your hobby/
your half time job?
That’s an easy one: no, I don t earn a living doing photography. It’s
strictly a hobby.
5. What's your day job?
I am a physicist by training but now am working as manager in the telecom business
and a homeopath.
6. Do you have special education? Did you take courses or go to a school
learn photography?
I have no formal or informal, for that matter education in photography.
My physics training makes it easier to understand the optical concepts
behind it, though. I do hunt around in the internet for information and
visit the odd exhibit to learn how other people see the world.
7. Are you specializing in a particular area of photography? What are your
favorite places/objects to shoot?
Given the photographic targets readily available to me, I do
portraits, landscape and macro. Haven’t done any sports/action photography
yet, and not too many animal shots (although we have a cat).
8. Who are your big photographic influences?
My father recently died and left a large collection of slides behind. So I guess,
you can count him as one of my influences.
9. How do you educate yourself? Do you read special literature, visit
photography galleries? What photo books/magazines do you have on your
bookshelf?
I peruse the internet and visit some galleries when the bug bites me (couple
times a year, maybe). I haven t subscribed to any magazine and don t buy one
off the shelf either.
10. What equipment and software do you use (camera(s), lenses, film, etc.)?
I got more deeply into photography when, after my Fuji Finepix S7000 got
stolen, I decided to buy a Nikon D80. Therefore I ditched the
kit zoom that came with the D80 (a 18-135mm/3.5-5.6) and bought a Sigma
50mm/2.8 macro prime lens. My second lens is a Sigma 18-50mm/2.8 zoom.
11. What is your opinion on post-processing, especially enhancing pictures?
For me, the art lies in getting it right before I release the
shutter. Afterwards, I may change the exposure a bit, correct the white
balance, or nudge the contrast up or down a fraction. I get my satisfaction
from the action and decisions I take right up to pressing the shutter
release.
12. What advice would you give someone who is interested in photography and
wants to improve their photography skills?
First and foremost: learn to see. Then learn to see through a camera. Then
look at what came out of the camera and see how it stacks up against what
you saw in the first place.
13. What's the most challenging aspect of photography for you? What's the
best part of it?
The biggest challenge is to exapand the way in which you can look at things.
Photography happens in your mind. The camera is merely a technical
instrument that helps you show other people what you saw in your mind.
Therefore the biggest challenge ist to develop and cultivate my mind s eye.
14. Could you please attach or send links to 3 favourite photos you took?
Ok.
