Heavyweight Glasses
I think the optics are good, although I have noticed some color aberrations -- color tinges that shouldn't be present on the edges of things.

Weight is an issue, and they're bigger than other glasses people use. Backpackers won't like them for those reasons. I don't even take them on day hikes. I often go out with birdwatchers; they comment that the optics are good, although not equal to glasses in the $500+ category. But they wouldn't buy glasses that heavy because your arms start to shake when you hold that much weight up to your eyes for minutes at a time, as birdwatchers do.

On the other hand, they look durable. I think that if you want good optics, not necessarily great optics, and can deal with the weight and size, these are a super value.

nikon action 10x50
We used these binoculars for a week on a trip to the UP of Michigan for scenery, watching freighters on Lake Superior and a few birds. They have very sharp focus and very clear. The weight was no problem. They work great with glasses however I find it easier to lift my glasses up and then use the binoculars. That is just personal. I have nothing but good to say about them. I had cheap Bushnell's and there is no comparison.

Love these binoculars
After much research we chose Nikon action 12X50. Our old binoculars were Bushnell 10X50. So I guess we thought more is better...well it is a bit better. Our eyes are getting older and it is a treat to see a long distance. These are great for the price. A little large maybe, but we were use to it.

Great binoculars!
This is for the Nikon Action 12x50 binoculars. I am not a hard-core bird watcher, nor do I hold myself out to be overly knowledgeable about binoculars. I use binoculars to look at the landscape and wildlife in my backyard and on vacations -- at distances from 20ft. to approx. 1 mile. My previous binoculars were an old (probably 15 years old) pair of 10x50 Bushnells.

After reading hundreds of reviews here at Amazon, and googling and reading binocular reviews at other sites, I bought these Nikons. They are much better than the old Bushnells I have! I would imagine that a new pair of Bushnells would also be better than my old ones, due to technological progress, so I realize it's not exactly an apples to apples comparison.

After reading reviews and giving thought to how I use binoculars, I decided to go with the Nikons. My only dilemma was whether to get the 10x or the 12x. The hesitation came from other reviewers stating that with anything over 10x, you wouldn't be able to hold it steady enough and may need a tripod. I have not had that problem, and am extremely glad that I went with the 12x. I notice no difference in being able to steady them from the old 10x.

Nikon Cameras History

Nikon Corporation is one of the major companies of the Mitsubishi Group, a multinational corporation headquartered in Tokyo, Japan and specializing in optics and imaging.

Nippon Kogaku K.K., or Japanese Optical Society (afterwards became known as Nikon Corporation) was formed at July 25, 1917 as a result of merging of three firms: Tokyo Keiki Seisaku-sho's optical division, Iwaki Glass Seisaku-sho и Fujii Lens Seizo-sho. The new company was aimed at manufacturing high-quality optics for Imperial Japanese Navy. And up to 1945 it actually was their main goal that determined the company’s philosophy and traditions. The first president of Nippon Kogaku was Yoshihira Wada.

Apart from military equipment the company produced microscopes, telescopes and other measuring instruments for industry and science. From 1932 they started serial production of Nikkor lenses for photo cameras. It’s an interesting fact that all Canon cameras, launched between 1937 and 1947 were equipped with lenses produced by Nikon!

After the WW II Nippon Kogaku K.K. manufactured its own camera –a rangefinder Nikon 1 – and stopped manufacturing lenses for Canon. The new camera appeared already Nikon-branded.
