May be I'm not right but I think that you, my dear shotaddicted forum members, share your photos here for compliments only! It's just like you know that you will receive only good comments :) Looking through this section I haven't noticed any sign of criticism!
So, I'd like you to know that from this very second I will comment all photos that will appear in this section. So that you know what is good and what needs to be developed. I've read from many people here that they want to improve their skills but don't know how. So, it will be your chance.
Of course, I'm not a famous critic, and my opinion can be rather individual but I'm truly convinced that any discussion leads to a progress, and criticizing other pictures, we improve ours.
Though sharing your photo here, you can choose if it should be
- criticized
- just complimented
- both pluses and minuses mentioned
Of course, everyone is welcome to share his opinion and dispute with me :) |

hm.. I also think it's a good idea.
So, recently the contest Children was finished. And my photo was the 6th. It means someone liked it and someone didn't :) I would like to get all your feedback, please! |

I would say that might be due to how much you dont really see the children.. since the subject was children a more focused picture on them might have done better... too much sky and all.. But it is a great pic! |

Lynxy, first of all, thank you to be the first one that we can experiment on :)
I think the photo is worth an approval. It has an idea, it's edited well. And it's a good example when the sloping horizon doesn't make you feel dizzy. The reason is the figures of children are on the proper level and there are other lines under different angles.
I've also noticed the front area is darkened a bit. Is it a real effect or the result of your work? :) Though it doesn't really matter because both variants do credits to you. The fact is that dark objects are always interpreted by our mind as closer, and light objects as further.
What I also liked is a motion. Though we see only fixed poses at the picture, but we can easily guess the past of this episode and imagine the future.
Then I totally agree with heatherlynne!
When taking a pic, everything that you compose should be united around the main subject. And not only united but it should stress your idea.
Let's have a look.. what is the idea of your photo? The culmination is the falling child and the other boys' reaction. So it should be stressed.
But there isn't any line that would lead our eyes about the picture to the very subject.
The sky is very nice here, its colors and blurring and, whereas your caption to the pic, you wanted to stress the huge world the children live in. But it's already another subject, and it doesn't stress the previous one.

Since the contest was about children the main focus of your photograph should have been the children. You could easily crop the image so there isn't so much of the sky and beach.
I don't know if you do any post process editing or what kind of camera you use or I could give you some suggestions that have helped me.

I agree with the idea of cropping for this photo in this (Children) contest.
Maybe make it more of a panorama view?
I really like how the shore slopes one way and the horizon the other way.
And the obvious action of the children . . . . . kids being kids, perfect! |

heatherlynne, thank you! Yes, now I see.. you're right.. but that was max of my zoom, so I couldn't imagine this pic in the other way.. :(
Aleksandra, Thanks for approval :) Yes, I've darkened the foreground - I was taught this trick at my photo courses.
But why shouldn't I mix the subjects? Why is it impossible to tell with the help of one shot that boys are behaving badly not helping a little lady, but they should be taught this because there are definite rules in this huge world! :)
Though I appreciate your help.. I haven't thought a lot about lines that can stress the subject...
Btw, I've corrected the horizon but didn't like it :)
TJRusso, actually, I use only kit of my Canon 350D. (But soon I'm going to make some update :) )
Yes, I did some editing. But I'm a follower of minimum photoshop (may be because I'm not a pro in max ;)) So I don't really like cropping. I think the photographer should photograph first of all, and cropping is making a totally new picture (that has poorer quality). It's not very important if it's a web-pic but in any way it got stuck in my mind :)
I've just worked with levels a bit, enhanced and blurred the sky, raised the contrast a bit, sharpened the children... And, yeah, darkened the foreground :)

Lynxy, you're right, in the panorama crop, something is missing! It is the beautiful sky! I cropped it only to showcase the children because you entered it in the Children contest.
I love the picture. |
