Does anyone know of any way to make your own infrared filter versus spending +$100 on one?

If you want a filter that only passes IR light you can use normal negative film that has been blackened totally (i.e. completely overexposed). As to how you are going to mount this, you're on your own.

I was playing around with IR and used unexposed film. It works pretty good but I found you need two layers to get the best effect.

For mounting it I used an old 35mm plastic container which just happened to fit great over my Sony DSC-W80 nicely. I cut the container down so the lens was fairly close to it. Then I cut a square hole in the cap of the container and pasted 2 layers of film in the front. Presto, it worked for me!

Have fun with it.
