When I rate the contest submissions I try to leave a bit of a comment whenever possible. Many times this will be something that I find could be improved upon, which I try to phrase in the form of an encouragement.
Reading the comments other people leave, I can't help but feel like a jerk. The vast majority are "nice shot" comments. I feel that I myself would prefer a more specific feedback to my endeavours. What did you like, what didn't you like, how would you have gone about it, etc.
However, being pretty much the only with critique, I feel like a come across as a know-it-all kind of jerk and would like to get some opinions whether this kind of commenting is welcome here at all.

P.S.: I tried to make this into a poll. Courious to see if it works.... |

| i picked number one. i welcome suggestions on how to improve my pictures as long as it is done in a nice and polite way. some on here leave rude and mean so called suggestions. that just tends to make people angry. i dont usually leave suggestions on how to improve a shot because i dont feel i am experianced enough to do so. |

| I picked the first one. I would much rather receive comments that offer tips and suggestions, or just flat out state what I did wrong and how to fix it. I'm lousy at leaving those type of comments though, because first off, I don't feel like I have enough experience, and second, I don't want to hurt any one's feelings. And alot of the time, I just don't see anything that could be improved. |

Welcome to the "know-it-all kind of jerk" club Chris...
I have suggested to those who want an honest critique of their work to post the shot in the forum "share photos".
My .01 worth… Had to give the other penny to the Proff for the fish shot.

I agree, I picked the first option. I'd welcome constructive input.
The "Nice shot, dude" comment is appreciated also because I think it lets me know that the shot has a value to somebody other than me, but tips on how to improve on it are certainly taken to heart.
My goal is to make my last shot just a bit better than the previous.

it was a good idea to. there were only a few members that posted pictures. then most of the time, they were ignored. pretty much like the speed challenge. |

The whole speed challange was was kind of a bust wasn't it...
I wish I knew what it would take to get a few more people involved in the forums. There seem to be many who stop by to look but only 6 to 8 regular participants. I aggitated for the chat mod and so far haven't been able to catch anyone there.
I can't say I remember anyone who asked for comments in the forum being "ignored". _________________ Orville Wright didn’t have a pilot's license. |

Chris,
Critiquing any work in which someone has invested emotional capital is always risky. However, so long as criticism is offered in the spirit you characterize, I believe it should be well received. From my perspective, I welcome useful commentary, for a good part of the reason for my participation here at this site is to improve my skills. It's impossible to do that without objective viewpoints forthrightly expressed. Hope this helps assuage your guilt. LOL.
Oh, and don't believe JLW. He has NOT paid me one cent! |

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. In commenting I'll try to balance the critical remarks with at least one positive observation. So far I have tried to comment on most pictures I vote for. Given the large number of entrants in the atmosphere contest (35 at my last checking), it does take some time. I've been taking the time in the hopes that people would make the effort and leave comments on my photos as well.
The big -- but unspoken -- premisse under which I leave my comments is that I am just as likely to be wrong as anyone else. Please keep that in mind if you find one of my remarks a bit on the trite side.
