| What does winning a contest mean with the current scoring method? After observing few contests, I realized that it is possible that a photo can win a contest on a pupolar vote basis. For example, 10 votes for 71 points (averaging 7/10) can be placed before 7 votes of 70 (10/10, a perfect score by voter). My question is if the purpose of a contest is to vote for the best photos in the category or most popular photo in the category (assuming more votes means more popular). The best scenario is winning photos are also popular. However, this is not always the case. I don't have a solution or any suggestion though. It is just my observation. |

Lisu,
The contest scoring system is really simple and based on popularity - the more people vote for the image the higher probability it will win.
And your sample:
| Quote: |
| 10 votes for 71 points (averaging 7/10) can be placed before 7 votes of 70 (10/10) |
just shows that more people like the fisrt image though it is not perfect from their point of view and it does not get top rated.
But we are open to the ideas how to improve the system. I like your idea of adding one more voting scale. Probably, after getting other member opinion the scoring system will be modified.
Any other suggestions? _________________ New here? Welcome to our community! |

Thank you for your clarification. If the contest is about pupolarity, you can make the scoring system even simpler then. Each voter will vote on the picture he or she likes, the picture with most votes wins. There is no need for scale 1-10 unless we are looking for the quality of a photo. Let's look at another extreme example, let say 30 people voted 3 points each on a photo for a total of 90 points because they all feft the photo was below avarage, i.e. a bad photo. Yet 10 people voted 8 points each on another photo for a total of 80 points because they all felt the photo was really good. In this case, the bad photo wins even though the voters felt the picture was bad. Too many bad would make it good!?
In reality, the perception of any photo contest winning picture is a good picture. People would be confused if this is not true.
Like I said in my earlier message. I don't have a suggestion but just an observation, a logical observation. |

Lisu,
I agree with your observations.
As I said we are open to any ideas that will make the photo contests more attractive and fair to our users. _________________ New here? Welcome to our community! |

I suggested a highest average score method on another thread, but I think the method lisu suggested might work better.
Simply ask people to vote for the photos they like best--1 point per vote. Voters could even vote for more than one photo per contest--they would simply be picking the photos that they thought were the best from each contest.
This would give the result of the most admired photos finishing highest, which I think is what we are looking for in a user judged contest. _________________ All the Best, Jeff

Jeff, this idea is also added to the list.
As I have mentioned in another thread, I think we will start a sort of poll offering the members to vote for that kind of scoring system they like most picking it from the idea list members leave in the forum.
Feel free to post your ideas. I think we will launch that poll in a week or so when and if we get more suggestions. _________________ New here? Welcome to our community! |

Why not make the voting a ranking of pictures? This would also solve the problem of inconsistent "calibration" of voting scales. By that I mean that among different people a "3" means slightly different things.
If you do a ranking of pictures this ambiguity would vanish.

Chris,
could you give a sample of what you mean - i am not sure i have got your idea.
by the way, this website is over 2 years old and i think you have changed the voting system at least two times. first we would discuss that in the forums, then we would implement the changes.
month or two later there would pop up threads in the forum where the website members said they did not like our voting system. vicious circle?.. _________________ New here? Welcome to our community! |

Does it show that more people like that shot really... Cause i dont nessecarliy think it does... So many people enter the contests now.. there are more and more entries everytime.. and not everyone votes on every pic.. i think cause they dont want to and because honestly to do it ur sittin there for a bit waiting for every pic to download so u can!!

What I mean is that you can cast a vote for which picture should be first place, which second, and which third, and so on.
The problem with the scoring system right now -- as I see it -- is that by giving some picture, e.g., a 5 there is no clear definition what that 5 means. Somebody will probably have a slightly different view on when to give a 5. But saying "I like this picture second best" by ranking it second is pretty unambiguous.
For each vote of "best photo" a photo gets 3 points, for each "second place" 2, and for each "third place" 1 point. Adding up all the points will give you the contest ranking of all photos.
A slightly different and a bit more flexible system is to give each voter 6 points to distribute among the contest photos. He/she is free to award all 6 points to one outstanding photo or distribute them in any way s/he wants. This would allow anyone to designate one point to the 6 best photos when he can't make up his mind, too.
What think you? -- Chris. |
