This technique seems to give images tremendous depth of colour and dynamic range--I'm definately going to have to try this.

As i understand this technique: you just make a digital photo, upload it to your pc and modify it with Photoshop. It is the last step where you make your image a HDR one. Am i right?

You are right digi. HDR images have a far higher dynamic range of exposures (i.e a large difference between light and dark areas) than normal digital photos.
