I was doing headshots of a friend on Wednesday for practice. Most of them were blurry or the lighting was messed up, but we managed to get a few good ones. Anyway, this picture is not the best because it was to dark so when i lightened it up it caused the noise, but that is not why I am posting it. I was wondering if you guys could give me your opinion on my touch up job. (Disregard the picture quality basically, and let me know if the way I touched up the facial features was good or bad)
Personally I think it is pretty good given that its my first time. Well, I have touched up pimples before, but never wrinkles and eye bags so this is my first for it. But I know there is always room for improvement and you all have been at this a lot longer than me so I appreciate your opinions.
Thanks a lot!

Hey lastar811
You'd think with 2800 + "registered users" someone would take the time to give you some feedback. I guess no one is reading the forums.
Anyhow here's my take on your retouch... If this is your first attempt at retouching it is pretty good. I do have a couple of observations. First.. Leave a few wrinkles on us old guys.. I know women hate them but in men it defines our character. My eyesight isn’t that good but the skin tone looks a lil too red to me and the color under the eyes makes it look like the guy has a couple of shiners.
I took the liberty of downloading your original image and making a few adjustments, I’m no expert so you and the others can decide if it makes any difference. The shot on the left is your original retouch.

You are right about the skin tones.
Also, I agree with the wrinkles thing. As a female, I personally don't care about wrinkles on older guys. Its natural and for that reason they are beautiful in their own way. (Sort of like the was a females face changes while she is pregnant. Though it gets round and sort of chubby it has that special glow to it.) Not to mention, that if I had a problem with older guys and their wrinkles then it would probably cause a disturbance in my relationship with my boyfriend considering our ages. (See profile picture ...picture was taken by a mentor.)
Either way, Joe, the guy pictured, was talking about not wanting to look so old because he is going to use these pictures for his updated acting resume so I decided to play around with the editing. Obviously he can't use the version I got that time because it makes him look so much younger, but now I have a good feel for what I need to do. Plus I got started on it and was having so much fun I wanted to see how far I could take it.
Thanks for your comments and help. When I go back to redo this (or possibly a different) picture for actual use later today I will post it here and hopefully there will be an improvement. Practice makes perfect.
Also on the list of things to do today----I am going to try to make a light box and a new backdrop before lunch, and after lunch its off to the Air and Space Museum with the "crew" (a bunch of friends lol) and the camera. The light box should be easy as soon as I go get the rest of the supplies. The backdrop on the other hand I don't have high expectations for since creating one has become a trial and error sort of process. I will post new topics later about how things turn out, hopefully we can get some people stirred up in this forum. |

The touchups you did to make the portrait look brighter also resulted in its coming across as a bit washed out and hazy. In that case I would look to use a selective approach. Either use a separate highlight/midtone/shadow tool or an alpha channel or mask to apply the lightening only where it's necessary.
This looks like a classic window portrait setup, where the light mainly comes from a window off to one side. The choice of background is very becoming to the shot. It's weak point is, as you already pointed out, the lighting and contrast.
I find that I you can't really turn a bad shot into a good one by retouching it afterwards. Everything you need to do per software afterwards is something that you weren't able to do with your camery before. I say this because I myself fell into the trap of using image editing software extensively, and initially I even liked the resulting images better than the original ones (not so now, anymore; they look "overdone" and artificial). Now, that I have gained a bit of experience and a better eye, the good shots among those I take don't need any touch up. That, to me, is a sign that I am doing some more things right compared to my original beginnings. |

I completely understand. I have an early morning job everyday for about 3 hours then have my normal full time job. When I get home I want to relax and spend time with friends and family. I check the website several times a day though so I can keep up with it, but I was wanting to enter into the self photography logo contest and could never find the time to complete it. I am still working on it the project even though the contest is closed so I may post it just for the fun of it. Why don't you post your "mostly white" picture so we can see it? Obviously we can't vote for it, but I think there is more to the contest than simply voting and trying to get votes.
P.S. I haven't made my light tent yet, I ended up going to sleep. But I did get a couple good pics from the museum I will post, but for now I am off to work be back soon. |
