I don't want to sound dense here but I need to have verification on what counts as texture and what doesn't...

Now I obviously know that a picture of a old brick wall would be texture, but what else is included? A baby wearing fuzzy pajamas? What about something that has a smooth texture, such as a vase?

Also would my chocolate chips picture count as a texture or a depth of field? If it counts as a texture I still don't want to enter it, but it would nice to know if it would be okay to enter.

Thanks,
Trina

In my opinion, texture is the feel of a surface or a fabric. So, I judge images from this point of view.

But I am sure there are different interpretations of texture in photography.

Sorry I wasn't more specific, I think texture can mean just about anything. Some examples of texture.
1. the visual and esp. tactile quality of a surface: rough texture.
2. the characteristic structure of the interwoven or intertwined threads, strands, or the like, that make up a textile fabric: coarse texture.
3. the characteristic physical structure given to a material, an object, etc., by the size, shape, arrangement, and proportions of its parts: soil of a sandy texture; a cake with a heavy texture.
4. an essential or characteristic quality; essence.
5. Fine Arts. a. the characteristic visual and tactile quality of the surface of a work of art resulting from the way in which the materials are used.
b. the imitation of the tactile quality of represented objects.

6. the quality given, as to a musical or literary work, by the combination or interrelation of parts or elements.
7. a rough or grainy surface quality.
8. anything produced by weaving; woven fabric.
–verb (used with object) 9. to give texture or a particular texture to.
10. to make by or as if by weaving.

ok, so how do I remove a picture that I now assume does not fit the subject of this contest? To me the feathers were a texture, but it doesn't seem to be included, so I'll remove the submission if possible.

Denisebug,

I just did a search for "feather" in the gallery. The picture you posted recently would qualify as a texture to me, even if it doesn't fit the dictionary definition. This is where I was having a problem understanding was accepted in the contest also. I was thinking a picture of my cat would count, but have refrained from posting it because I wasn't quite sure.

Please don't delete your entries Denise,in my opinion anything goes for texture. ( The earlier post was just some examples.) Trina, I feel your cat picture would fit the subject as well.(Fur has a texture to it as well as the cat's nose. :) )

Lol, :D thanks for adding that, because I too felt that would count, and put in a photo of my cat. Not too original, and had I thought about it more, I would have picked something different. Contest is closed now though...
