As requested:
- an 'abuse alert' function added. It enables you to udate the website administration of rude comments you get, similar images entered to a number of contests, etc. The 'alert' button is placed on every contest image page. Those who will repeatedly abuse the contests rules will be permanently banned from the website.
- from now on members can't cast votes for their own images entered into the photo contests (please, check it and let me know if it does not function properly on your end).
More minor changes coming incl. invisible comments while the voting is still open. _________________ New here? Welcome to our community! |

These are all great changes but until you address the fact that anyone can have dozens of "registered accounts" that can be used to manipulate the voting the contests won't mean much. I currently have 5 accounts and can move a particular photo into or out of a place position at will. There are a couple of users here that no matter how many times you bump their photos out of the running , within 24 hours they are right back in a place position. Ocasionally only one additional vote has been cast.
BTY .. I just voted for both of my own photos entered in current contests.

well, i am surprised to hear that people run multiple accounts - my idea was: this is a website where people come to share their hobby and enjoy the time.
i guess we will pay attention to this multiple account matter in the future.

Just so no one gets to upset about my playing around with the extra accounts I have already and will continue to withdraw any of my photos that find their way to any of the top three positions just prior to the contest closing.
I still think that every voter and their vote should be identified during the contest judging. Or, set up a three (or more) person revolving judging panel that can confer, then evaulate and rank the photos for the contest.
Anyone noticed that there are a couple of sets of duplicate photos in the current "Forgotten" contest?
Jim
Sorry for being such a pain : ) |

I was going to mention that myself. There are also a few duplicate entries in the Night contest too. I don't believe it was done on purpose, could just have been a bug in the site. I get that dreaded " page can't be displayed" errors from time to time on here. |

i like this idea, Jim. and i think we should give it a try, but:
1. we need three volunteering persons to join the judging panel. ok, two, as you agree to be one of the three.
2. work out the procedures: how do you see the entire voting process with the judging panel involved? _________________ New here? Welcome to our community! |

| I was disappointed to learn it was done by popularity here as well as opposed to judging. People will set up multiple accounts and vote, bound to happen and it is a shame. It should be done on honor system as intended, but you will find if you look at IP addresses, people will vote multiple times anyway. I like that you took away voting on your own but that won't stop them. |

I know that the voting and judging procedure for contests has been a much debated topic. When I look at the rankings of some past and current contests I can understand why.
My main problem: the final ranking of entries rarely reflects the quality of the images.
You can, of course, call me subjective -- and you'd be right. But, come on, there's a difference between a shot that's barely suitable for the family album and a credible attempt at an artistic composition. Frequently I find the former outranking the latter. This, to me, indicates that the judging procedure is more of a popularity contest than an attempt to rank entries according to their artistic merits.
My suggestion: why not make voting rights something that you have to earn? It's clear that there are some members here, who are highly accomplished. Some others are working toward that goal. Those groups of members I would ask to become judges.
If one goal of this site is to provide a platform which people can use to advance their photography skills, then we need to make sure that the quality of our judges is better than the average of all members.
It's just not fun entering pictures in a contest when you already know that quality is not the most important thing being judged.
Just my opinion, -- Chris. |

| I definitely agree with you about quality not always being judged, but if only certain people are allowed to vote, then it will just be based on their personal opinions. Also, what if some people aren't around to vote on all the contests? Then there will be a very small amount of votes. Just a few things to consider maybe. |
