Hi, I noticed recently, especially when looking at the "Overlooked Photography" pictures, that often the best pictures are in regular contests, not advanced ones. I also noticed that the advance contests have prizes sometimes. I was just wondering if it would be a good idea to do a regular contest that is a prize contest. I understand some people might abuse that, but I think it would get more people to submit photos, and it seems more and better photo's are often submitted to regular contests more than the advanced ones. Just my opionion.

The original idea of advanced contests is to allow shotaddict most active and experienced photographers join sort of 'hard' contests.
Prizes should be a sort of reward for active participation on this website.
Probably, we will change that. _________________ New here? Welcome to our community! |

Perhaps there should be a contest for newbies.. Only first and second time posters. Give em a chance to get their cameras wet... So to speak.

While I’m here… I’d like to see the anonymity of the contest entrants and voters removed. Anyone posting an image to a contest should be willing to have their name attached to it. And anyone casting a scoring vote in a contest should be willing to express their reasons for the vote. I personally think the voting is too narrowly defined. Perhaps there could be other categories added to the mix. For example: Instead of just a single category for “technique”. How about a category for composition, focus, lighting, Depth of field etc… That way a photographer would stand a chance of understanding what it is about a photo that needs improvement. And scoring for the “subject”; in my humble opinion this is a very subjective category as is evidenced by the fact that there are always entries that have little or no bearing on the contest subject in which they are entered. A scale with a 1 to 5 rating on subject, composition, focus, lighting, depth of field and overall appeal would be much more useful to me as a photographer looking to improve the quality of my work. You could post the contests results for 1st 2nd and 3rd and also post the other entrants averages of their score in each of the categories.
Just one man’s opinion.

Jim,
i have copied your ideas to my special file.
i would like to hear the opinion of other members.
in my opinion your idea to add more features with voting may sound a bit complicated to majority of beginners.
the anonymity of the contest entrants and voters - it is removed once the voting is over. and this feature (anonymity) was requested by a number of regular members and recently just introduced. _________________ New here? Welcome to our community! |

Now that I have participated in two contests (textures and women) and cast votes in three contests I am in a better position to form an opinion on the scoring system. Here is my suggestion:
(1) Keep submissions anonymous until the scoring period is over. That way favoritism is less of a problem and you are less likely to be biased by the photographer's name.
(2) Keep voting anonymous and even hide the number of votes cast during the voting period. The less information there is, the less the chance to be biased.
(3) The photos should be displayed in a random order each time someone goes to cast his vote. This also helps to counteract a tendency to start rating photos from the beginning and getting tired of it toward the end.
(4) I would restrict voting rights only to those members that have demonstrated some level of participation in the forum. This will go some way toward restricting multi account votes by the same person. Someone with 5 accounts would neet to keep up a presence for each one of them independently in the forum, which -- I presume -- can get a bit straining.
(3) The scoring system itself is what I have the most gripes about. It is totally subjective in the sense that a "7" by one person may connote something totally different than the same score by another person. Therefore I propse the following system: Each voter gets 10 points he can award in every which way he wants. He can give all 10 to one photo or 1 point each for 10 photos. In the end, the total sum of points awarded determines the ranking. I think that a relative ranking system is superior and fairer than a quasi absolute scoring system. For me it is MUCH easier to say I like this photo better than that one rather than say this photo deserves a 5 in composition and that a 4.
I could also see a ranking system where each voter orders the contest submissions from best to worst according to his judgement. The final score is than the average rank for each photo calculated from all rankings.
Would be interested to learn what other members think.
Greetings, -- Chris. |

Chris, I like the idea of having 10 bucks (points) to spend however we like in each contest. Maybe even split 20 with 10 for technique and 10 for subject? And because we're all trying to get better shots every day, I think getting a technique feedback score would also be helpful.

I have to agree with both of you.I think the votingsystem as it is is a bit vague, also i like the idea of not showing the#of votes until the voting is finished.
I am new to this site (less then a month)and have entered 3 contests and really enjoy the opportunity to have my photos rated as well as being able to rate other photographers work.So i don't want to sound like i'm complaining,I really love thise site, just trying to give a little input.

I really hope that we can all come up with some kind of new voting system.. I really dont think the current one is right and or fair when a picture with lower votes beats out a picture with higher votes. If more people voted on a picture then the other one, why is the one with the higher votes not ahead... It seems as though it was more popular then the others having more votes...
I kinda like the 10 point idea i think Chris had in this thread.. But at the same time dont.. If ya think about it, there are more and more entires being entered with every contest. If the 10 point is put into place, there will be pictures that dont receive any votes at all, and that could discourage people from entering pictures into the contests, and or hurt some feelings..

i like denise's idea of having ten points each for technique and subject, every voter will only be able to use those ten points each.
Like denise said, you can give all the points to one picture,or distrubute them as you seem fit.
