Frankly speaking, at the beginning of my photo "career" I supported the idea that the less Photoshop is the best.
But now when I'm getting involved in it, learning different techniques... I'm afraid I'm not a shotaddict, I'm a photoshopaddict
So my credo now is Photoshop is good until it's not so evident.
I usually use
curves, blend modes, burn and dodge tools for contrasting;
gaussian blur (for portraits mainly);
high pass for sharpening (thanx to shotaddict)
What is your opinion? And what Photoshop tools are your favorite?
and an interesting Watercolor Effect for you! _________________ my photos are O.K. to edit |

I still think photoshop is a bad thing!!!! Once u have used photo shop. You no longer have a picture, you now have an image that you couldnt capture with your camera... Also, I dont think that photo shop has done a bit of good for the confidence of young girls and women!!!! All we see anymore is photo shopped images, models airbrushed into perfection, including wieght loss... its not real.. They dont really look like that at all.. But we still look at those images and strive to look just like them, and are upset when we dont!!
I do play with photo shop, and do enjoy using it.. But, I really dont care to use it as a necessity for my photography... Id rather use it just for fun cause i am bored!!! |

| Although I don't have the real Photoshop, I do edit several of my pictures. Sometimes what you see while taking a picture isn't what your camera winds up seeing, especially when there's sun glare on the screen you're using. Or sometimes an experiment with editing just looks better. In both cases, editing works well (in my opinion). |

Thanx, good topic. Here is my point of view.
As a learning tool Photoshop is good.
For example, you've photographed a portrait. You can print it and then cut it to know, which crop is better. You can also paint on this print to find the better composition. But it's much faster to do all these steps in Photoshop. So it can help to open ones mind and get some ideas and aims from the real photo process. For example: "Will I be able to photograph the same picture as I've created in Photoshop?"
It's also a must for design or digital art, but, of course, a photographer should tend to shoot the real picture and use Photoshop only as a sharpening-resizing tool.
Though I can appreciate interesting post processing, still it's also a skill. |

| well i was thinking the left one looked better.funny how everyone sees things diffrent huh?to me the teardrop is a big part of the pic and its all but faded out.the hair is too painted looking.that is you cant see the strands of hair like you could before the "fixing".the ear ring is faded away with the hair color too.just looks way too photoshoped or painted to me. |

Heather, I agree with you about the beauty standard that Photoshop provides. It's not real, but when my friends ask to take a photo of them, they want to be the greatest, I understand it. So I really need Photoshop, cause my photo skills are not so high now...
Himself, this is what I've also wanted to tell! And what soft do you use?
Aleksandra, ehhh, sharpening-resizing.. that would be cool.. that's a pro!
Dwight Truitt, this photoshop lesson is not actually for improving a photo but for changing it. It teaches how to make your photo look like a painting. If compare from the photography point of view, I agree with you that the photo itself is much better.
So, you don't use Photoshop?
starstef601, thanx, I like this effect, too. _________________ my photos are O.K. to edit |

I have to say that using photoshop to sharpen an image, crop, resize, or enhance the color a little is okay. You're not changing the image, just enhancing it some. If it completely changes an image so that it no longer looks like the original image then it's not okay. |

@ Lynxy - I use Microsoft Photo Gallery, so my editing is limited to contrast/brightness and color temperature/tint/saturation adjustments. I recently experimented with texture layering on GIMP, though.
The Original
The Edited Version
Texture 1
Texture 2
Any feedback? |
