it is about rating the subject. For example, I entered a bloom for anything Goes. it is a beautiful photo of the bloom. There is nothing wrong with the subject.
rating it as low as 7 is beyond my comprehension. How does one rate the subject?
I can understand how one can rate the technique.

I would ppreciate a feedback.

Thanks

From my point of view it is hard to make some strict guidelines how to rate images subject. Image subject - it should impress the viewer in some way though I realize it sounds very subjective.

It would be nice to hear other members' opinion on this matter - probably we should make some changes to our CONTEST RULES and list some guidelines.

Caution … Long winded rant ahead…. Proceed at your own risk.

Imagine the subject being subjective. While there are a few exceptions, generally the people who vote here only pay attention to the top about 6 photos in the contest. Their vote is generally based “objectively” on whether your photo is likely to be any competition to theirs in the standings. They could think you have the best shot in the contest but why give it any high marks if they think it will bump them out of the standings. Beyond the top 6 to 8 photos no one cares even to vote or give you a suggestion on how to improve. Lets face it… every shot submitted is not a contest winner. About 95 % of the entries in the contests are what I would call “so what shots”. And that includes many of my own. That’s not to say they aren’t nice photos but they do little to draw you in to explore them in detail and to understand their story you must have had to be there. Many of these photos make their way into the top 3 positions. And like you not understanding why your photo was rated so low, I don’t understand why anyone looking at many of the photos found in the top positions rated them with marks that high.

You can’t take it all too seriously anyway; there isn’t much to be learned from someone’s “cool shot dude” comments.

So here are a few suggestions for the gang

First ... Bring back the visible comments feature so there can be some immediate feedback for the photographer’s posting. At least that way they may get a few ideas about what is good or not so good about their photo. I really don’t think it will sway anyone’s vote that much and besides it may help others understand a little more about what it is that makes a good photo vs a “so what shot”.

Second… Change the scoring so the “Subject” has the same value as the “Technical” Each of the areas that should be evaluated… Subject, Composure, Lighting, Focus, Depth of Field, Color, Cropping, etc could be rated (1) don’t like it, (2) neutral/so so, or 3 Like it. Those results then averaged. A person could at least get an idea about the basics of their work with such a system. It would help eliminate some of the subjective issues built in to the current system with such a heavy emphasis on the personal like or dislike for a particular shot… or photographer for that matter.

Ah crap! - Now I have to agree with Jim!! I never thought I would stoop this low but.... give credit where credit is due!! Well said Jim!

And for anyone taking this sooo seriously, well you have a problem. I've posted photos here that never made it in the top ten but won international awards in major photo competitions where they were judged by professional photographer.

So PLEASE enjoy the site and hopefully get so constructive criticism here to help you along your path of becoming a better photographer.

Guy

I agree with both JLW and chieflong. I'd love to see the contest judging have more of the technical aspects as catagories in the voting, but I do like the 1-5 rating more than just "like, don't like." I feel like that would help more on learning what I need to work on in different photos.

Caution... Continuation of previous rant!!!

First my thanks for the support from the "Phantom Photo Pfixer" You know who you are; and to TaraW.

The current contest "Nature" is a perfect example of what I was saying about the voting patterns that seem to be prevalent here.

Current place and votes.

1. Tara 5
2. Lake 7
3. Duck by the Pond 11
4. Swan 11
5. Vain Peacock 10
6. Tropical Paradise 11
7. Goose 6

Almost all the remaining 50 + photos in the contest have 6 or fewer votes.

Where did all those extra votes for the 3,4,5 and 6 place come from. Anyone care to venture a guess.

I could name the most likely of those who are voting past the 6th place because they are also most likely the same ones whose names I see regularly in the forum posts. They number about 6¡K Imagine that!

I'd love to figure out some other way to communicate with the other serious Photog buffs around here but the Jerry Springer attack rants seem to be the only thing that gets any body posting in the forums.

That's my $2 worth for now.

JLW

PS Here's a snapshot I got yesterday. How about a couple of "hey dude cool shot"s. :-)

Oh - just one more thing - and maybe the moderators would encourage this - is to suggest to everyone that they use the FORUM PAGE as their book mark for this site. I have it set up that way so when I log onto this site I can see if their have been any new postings.

My five bucks worth!!

OK - another thing - true NATURE photographs should contain ABSOLUTELY NO HUMAN INTERVENTION. Interesting enough that the top 3 places in the NATURE contest all contain some form of human intervention.

Not that they are poor shots - to the contrary they are all great photos but they are NOT nature photos.

So can I ask for change back from my five bucks??

I got ya an extra $2.50 right here... Astute observation... I think I completely missed that.

PS Don't let it go to your head.

Hey btw Chief while we're on the subject of nature... You guys up there in the north country ought to figure out a way to keep you pets from wandering... We must have a thousand noisy %&*^&%&$& Canadian honkers here at the lake.

Unfortunately I can't hunt here!!!

Jim
