this is home for the next two months, 18 whaling captains are spaced out 1/2 - 3/4 a mile apart on the edge of the lead opening at the edge of the ice.
The women use the tents for cooking the food and all the other chores of daily life out on the ocean ice.
The hunters sleep outside. NO tents, @ 50 below zero and colder !!
how do you suppose we get delicous fresh drinking water way out here in the middle of a salt water ocean, covered in salt water ocean ice ?
Yes we melt snow for washing and cleaning, but for cooking and drinking where do you suppose we get all the delicious fresh drinking water ?
Out here on the ocean ice.. you experience things that are difficult to get used to. One side of your face is sweating and the other side is being frost bit. The reflections and sunlight is blinding. You easilly get the best tan of your life in about 10 hours.. .. .. on your face and hands only !!
Because we are exposed to 24 hour sunlight. we easily become solar powered. It is very easy to stay alert and awake for 3 days or longer. |

This is how we obtain our food. We hunt for it, at sub zero temperatures that are often between 30 - 50 below zero (F). and sometimes much colder due to the strong north wind that is always present.

Food shopping at its fullest @ 40 below zero and colder. That wind just never stops and that brings the chill factor down to triple digits!! i.e. minus 100 below zero.
what you wear and how you dress is very important. "dirty clothes" cannot keep you warm. MANY very loose layers of clothing is essential to being able to stay out here on the ice pack, sleeping outside in sub zero temps.
What you eat.. .. and how you eat it.. .. is just as important !
Are you cold ?? Pick up that hacksaw and slice some pieces of thin strips of meat and swallow them whole. DO NOT CHEW.
