Hello all,
I have very little real photo experience, other than point and shoot cameras. I have a lot of photos from various places I have been. I may upload a few here, some digital images, some scanned photos. From places such as Japan, Canada, Hong Kong, Australia and Guam to name a few of the places I have been. Hind sight being 20/20 I kind of wish I was into photography back then.
I recently received a Nikon D40 for father’s day and realized that I have allot to learn! My previous point and shoot camera is a Kodak DC280. It takes decent pictures, but it has a power problem, I have to hit it now and then to get the power to come on (think it was the spill it took across the deck of a boat that did that)
Getting back to the Nikon, I have taken quite a few pictures with it and deleted most of them as I go through the learning process. I think the only pictures I kept so far of my son’s stupid cat.
What to take pictures of is a big question I ask myself, then I stop and think “it doesn’t matter, it’s digital, delete it later, shoot another” thinking this I still wonder what to shoot.
Yes, I tend to babble now and then on forums. Type a lot say little and spell badly, forgetting to hit the spacebar… which leads me to ask… can someone turn on the spell checker? (I cheated I typed this in word and pasted it here)
Now to go learn how to upload a photo or two…

Words of wisdom an old school teacher taught me - "You can learn from experience, but don't let experience be your teacher". Read lots and gain knowledge through sites such as this one my friend.
Enjoy your new DSLR but a word of caution - the reflex mirror will wear out. Most manufacture build them to last 50,000 activations with the odd ones (semi-pro and pro models) being good for 100,000.

Thank you Chief, I was unaware of teh Reflex mirror... now I have to look up info on that :)
I fully understand your experiance quotation. Being a retired Navy Chief I have learned a lot via experiancing myself, and reading. I tend to read before jumping in feet first.
I feel that I am at the point were I need to go shudder happy and try to apply what I have read. Mostly camera settings and what they do.
I am also teaching my self some photo editing above what little bit I have done over the years. Even though I really don't think photo's should be edited, I can see sometimes fixing contrast and brightness helps offest lack of camera setting knowledge. example in my gallery is a baby Racoon, when I took the pic the white above his eyes was way to bright (not sure the term for that.. blown out?) So playing with contrast and brightness I think it helped the photo a alot.
Oh I am using The Gimp as an editing software. I didn't want to spend allot on software. Would rather spend it on another lens. Currenlty I only have the 18-55 that came withthe D40.

Welcome to the sight Zarmengar!! I can't wait to see what you have in store for all of us here on shotaddict.. Like you I am at the point where I really need to sit down and read some books & figure out just how to make my camera catch what my eye sees!! (always been to ADHD to sit still long enough..lol :lol: )Termonology is my top priority!!!!.... I hope you enjoy shotaddict as much as I!!
