Pet photo contests - that might be a hit with ladies I guess. I think you should plan different topics of the future contests to attract miscellaneous groups of the Internet users.

As a way to go: what about making a specialized photo contest website for men? Or for the people of some profession? Yes, it will cut off many users that might become your community members. On the other hand, it will unite and draw those who would feel they belong to some elite group.
